Can I take Garcinia Cambogia while Breastfeeding?

It is well understood that one should not take weight loss or as such any herbal supplements during pregnancy but what about when you are breastfeeding?

It is common to gain lots of weight during pregnancy and everyone wants to shed that weight as soon as possible. Because of that we have received several queries whether breastfeeding mothers can take Garcinia Cambogia extract.

Well to start with, a good quality Garcinia Cambogia is all natural with no artificial ingredients, binders and other chemicals. If we go by what is there in GCE it should be all right to take the supplement but there is a catch.

Your body may react differently to a supplement especially post pregnancy, you may be taking medications which may interact with the supplement and most importantly whatever you eat also affects your baby through your milk. Other important point is Garcinia decreases your appetite which might not be the thing you want when you are breastfeeding. Doctors recommend a rich diet after pregnancy as your milk is the only thing your child has for all its nutrition requirements. A decreased diet may negatively impact your childs growth.

Considering all the above probable issues we believe as a breastfeeding mom you should avoid Garcinia Cambogia. Infact several brands mention this on their labels too. But if you desperately want to take it – make sure you do these two things first –

  • Consult your doctor about it
  • Choose absolutely the best Garcinia Cambogia extract (no compromise)

Hope this was helpful.

They still didn’t answer my question.
All I’m worried about is my Milk supply being hindered by the Garcinia; not my eating habits.

Their point is that if you don’t eat enough (an additional 300 calories at minimum) your supply will be affected. You have to have a good amount of calories for your body to make milk. Your body will fuel you first, so if you limit too much, your milk will suffer.

    • Shary

If you drink enough water your supply can be steady. Women who eat less still breastfeed in countries that don’t market weight loss supplements. Plenty of fluids and your supply will be fine.

I would personally be more concerned about my baby’s appetite as well as fat storage. The little ones need to eat to grow and need fat stores for energy.

i’m curious , i still breastfeed my 2yr old but its mostly before his nap, bedtime and in the morning when he wakes up…sometimes he’ll have little nursing sessions in between, but my question is if i take the garcinia cambogia a few hours before breastfeeding will he be alright? i’m asking you since you take it and are still breastfeeding, what sort of schedule do you use?

    • Kari Leep

They said a decreased appetite does affect your milk supply as you are not consuming enough calories to produce an adequate amount of milk.

    • Nicole Jackson

They did answer …yes it could due to decreased appetite

  • Amreen

I think the main concern would be if Garcinia can transfer to the baby through the breast milk? I would want to control my appetite, not baby’s.
